THE GREATER LITCHFIELD PRESERVATION TRUST, INC.

November 1, 2017

It is with great pleasure that The Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust, Inc. announces it has acquired the former Litchfield County Courthouse at 15 West Street, Litchfield, Connecticut. The Trust views this property as one of the most iconic and significant structures within both the Borough of Litchfield’s National Register District and the State designated Borough of Litchfield Historic District.  The Courthouse has existed in the center of the Commercial Block in one form or another since 1803. The current structure was designed by Robert W. Hill in 1889 after two disastrous fires in 1886 and again in 1888, destroyed the 2nd and 3rd Courthouses.

With the State of Connecticut vacating the building and terminating its interest in the structure, the Trust has acquired the Courthouse in order to preserve and protect the architectural and historic features of the building and to facilitate repurposing it to serve the long-term interests of the people of the Town of Litchfield.
