Projects of the Litchfield Preservation Trust

Between 1984 and 2014, the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust conducted comprehensive architectural and historic resource surveys, documenting over 900 historic buildings across Litchfield, including Northfield, Bantam, and East Litchfield, with support from state grants and partnerships with local historical societies, creating a valuable resource for residents, land-use boards, and preservation efforts.

In 2013, the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust supported the relocation and restoration of Harwinton’s historic 1795 farmhouse by funding a matching grant for planning, enabling site layout development and continued efforts toward construction.

In 2011, the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust completed a feasibility study, funded by a Historic Preservation Technical Assistance Grant, to explore adaptive reuse options for the vacant Litchfield County Jail, assisting the State’s efforts to market the property to potential buyers.

In 2009, the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust partnered with the Litchfield Garden Club to replace and restore the historic drinking fountain on the Center Green, combining efforts to install a new water line and fountain, with the original preserved by the Litchfield Historical Society.

In 2003, the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust completed “Project 2000,” a multi-year effort to bury utility lines serving the West Street commercial block, enhancing the area’s aesthetics and infrastructure through extensive collaboration with property owners, utility companies, and local contractors.

The Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust proudly announces the acquisition of the historic Litchfield County Courthouse, a landmark of architectural and historic significance, to preserve its legacy and repurpose it for the community’s future.

The Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust’s inaugural project in 1980 preserved the historic Post Office on South Street, overcoming funding challenges and advocacy hurdles to ensure its continued presence within Litchfield’s commercial block.

In 1994, the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust funded the update of the Town’s Plan of Development, collaborating with Mary Means Associates and local residents to create a citizen-based plan that was adopted by the Planning and Zoning Commission in 1995.

In 1994, the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust acquired and restored the historic Litchfield Agricultural Center, securing a long-term lease with Talbots and using proceeds to support its mission of preserving the town’s historic buildings.

In 1985 The Trust commissioned a firm to evaluate existing parking resources in the village business district and prepare plans for future needs of the area while being consistent with the historic nature of the area.

The Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust played a vital role in the Borough Sidewalk Project by actively participating and funding all street lamp posts along West and South Streets, contributing significantly to the project’s success and its positive impact on the Litchfield community.

Sidewalks and Lamp Posts. The Trust assisted in funding new sidewalks and paid for the new lights on South and West Streets.
